Happy Mother's Day!

This is a cake I made for my best friend for her mother-in-law.  Completely covered in fondant.  The petals I cut-out and then used a leaf impression mat to get the veined look on them.  This was a fun cake to make!

Final Cake in Wilton's Cake Course 3

So this is a stacked fondant covered cake.  I made the marshmallow fondant, so much cheaper and actually quite easy!  The roses are also made of fondant and took about 7 hours to make.  Kid you not.  This cake was time consuming, but I love the outcome!  Enjoy!  :)

Fondant Present Cake

So this is a cake I had to make for course 3, it's not the final cake.  I made the fondant myself, it's marshmallow fondant and it's super easy to make.  If you want the recipe for this fondant click HERE.

Another Take on the Chocolate Pudding/Whip Cream Cake

Same cake as the one I made for my husband's birthday, but this time I made the icing look more whipped, which I think looks better!

Final Cake in Wilton's Cake Course 2

So here is my final cake.  Basket weave design with tons of royal icing flowers.  I also painted the flowers with pearl dust to make them sparkle.  This cake probably took a total of two days to make.  Lots of work!

Happy Easter!

A little late, but here are my Easter decorated cookies!

Decorated Sugar Cookies

My first attempt at decorating a cookie with royal icing.  First I outlined in white, with tip 4.  Then I watered down the purple until it was school glue consistency.  Then I flooded the cookie using the same size tip, might have been tip 3 though.  Once dry to the touch I flooded the centre with yellow and immediately put sprinkles on it.  This was really fun to make!  Really enjoyed it! :)

Royal Icing Violets

So we learned how to do violets this past week with Royal Icing. I enjoy using Royal Icing more than Buttercream for doing flowers. :) Thanks for looking!

Friday, March 12, 2010

So I started my Wilton Course 2 cake decorating class this week. We learned how to do the rosebud and mum with buttercream icing. We'll be starting RI and colourflow next week. So I came home and decided to do a whole bunch these flowers and put them on my chocolate sour cream cup cakes today. I love making flowers! :) Thanks for looking!

Final Cake in Wilton's Cake Course 1

So this was my final cake for Course 1.  We had to do roses, which is tricky, and I still need lots of practise, but here you go.  I made a vanilla cake, a cake mix plus a cake extender recipe, which had sour cream in it.  I really liked the recipe as it gave it a nice flavour and made the cake denser, so this time it didn't just fall apart.

Also it made the cake bigger, as you can see, and after I put the roses on top I had a feeling that the cover for my cake carrier was going to crush the flowers.  Sure enough I noticed that is exactly what was happening, so I removed the lid, and took a picture with my phone.  This is why the picture isn't as nice as it could've been.

Next time I'll just fill my 8 inch, 2 inch deep pans, with three cups of batter each, instead of four.  :)

Valentine's Day Cupcakes

So I was in the Valentine's Day mood and made these cupcakes. Chocolate cupcakes with vanilla buttercream. I colour striped the bag to get the two tone affect. I used the 2D tip, Wilton's, the big closed star tip and built the stars up like a pyramid.  It was really easy and fun to do!

Baby Buggy Cupcakes

So these cupcakes were for course 1, lesson 3, our second "cake".  So I decided to do cupcakes, and since my friend is having a baby I decided to do these baby in a buggy design.  I saw the picture in the course book and thought they were so cute!  They were fun to make!

My First Cake in the Wilton's Cake Decorating Course 1

So this was a fun cake to make, and it took longer than I thought.  What I learned?  I'm very slow and meticulous, which I suppose is partially a good thing, but I'm hoping with practice I can speed up.  It's a three layer cake, and I used my baking strips to help keep it even on top.  It's all buttercream icing, with the different consistencies.  I learned a lot tonight and it was really fun!  I can't wait to keep learning more.

On this particular cake I used a cookie cutter for the flower impression, then piped it and used the star tip to fill.  Now the leaves... well we didn't learn how to do it tonight, I just took it upon myself to do it, as it needed leaves.  I also smoothed the buttercream icing using a small 4 inch foam roller, from Home Depot.

Twilight Themed Birthday Cake

This is my first attempt to make a layered cake as well as use fondant.  It was quite an experience, and I learned of what and what not to do.  Next time will be better!  The cake itself was Red Velvet.  I bought the fondant, called Virgin Ice, and it worked really well!  I added the black and red food gel concentrate into the fondant.  I made this along with a friend.  It was for my best friend's birthday.  She loves Twilight.

Introduction and Ariel Birthday Cake

Hello out there!  I've created this blog to track my journey through making cakes, cookies, and cupcakes.  I am starting Wilton's Cake Decorating Course 1 on Feb 1, 2009.  I will be journalling here my progress and pictures of my cakes!

I've always enjoying baking, hate cooking, and decided to try this course.  Last week I made my daughter's birthday cake, turned 4.  She loves Ariel, from the Little Mermaid.  This is the first time I've made anything really decorative, so the work isn't perfect, yet.
